So how did I enter into the world of SEO? Well in relation to SEO, surfing the web has become the norm for finding everything and anything, so I delved right in with hopes of finding an internship. After browsing across some different platforms I landed on a job posting for a SEO intern position at Loud Interactive. Of course my first thought was, “What is SEO?” and how does it fall under the tech category. I have always been drawn to learning about the tech industry and media studies, but SEO was something I had only briefly stumbled upon so I did some research. I landed an interview and was offered a job. Fast forward to my first day, a young college girl entering into the SEO world as a beginner.
First things first, SEO is way more complex than I imagined. Knowing the basics is not enough when entering a room full of industry professionals, but thankfully everyone was eager to help me learn. Each day I was introduced to different facets of the SEO process. From sales calls to keyword research, I began to piece it all together. For example, one day I sat down with Brittany who taught me about social media marketing strategies. The next day Kevin, an account executive, shared with me how he prepared for sales meetings and helped me understand the value of SEO.
Before starting at Loud I understood the importance of companies having a good presence on the web, after all everyone uses the internet to find whatever they are looking for. However, I did not understand the algorithms in place behind all of it. I knew that no one looks at the second page of Google search results, but I did not know what it takes to rank high on the first page. So that is where my learning took off…
Google is by far the most popular search engine, so it is the primary focus in the SEO world. It prides itself in having organic search, so it is important for SEO companies to coincide with what Google is looking for. From this knowledge I began learning the fundamental elements behind the ranking system.
The three main factors are:
All of these contribute to how high one ranks in the search results. In order to have a higher ranking a website must strengthen the previously mentioned factors through different strategies. Some of which involve content marketing, keyword analysis, social media marketing, and link building. Through the implementation of different methods and marketing strategies, companies can find themselves ranking higher in search results.
Once I began to formulate a solid understanding of how SEO works, I quickly discovered that no two days are ever alike in the office. The environment is fast paced, high energy, and requires hard work which means I had to be prepared for new projects to pop up. It definitely took me a week or so to get a great gauge on what was going on and learn that there really is no cookie cutter SEO.
This summer I am pleased to say that I have returned to Loud Interactive again as an SEO intern. My first summer taught me something very important, for beginners SEO is a lot about learning as you go. Jumping right into a new industry that I was a novice in was not an easy process. Left and right I was introduced to new things, some of which I had never heard of before, but it was both exciting and intellectually stimulating.Once things got going I understood the benefits of SEO and how companies can actually be brought to the next level. Finally, working at Loud has taught me that SEO requires team collaboration on different levels, and I can definitely say that the Loud team is incomparable.
